If you’re new to sober living in Santa Fe, practicing self care may not yet be something you do. However, practicing self care is extremely important – whether you’re in addiction recovery or not – for your well being.
None of us practice enough self care. We go through our daily lives at a feverish pace, convinced we are invincible. It isn’t until we are knocked on our butts with a cold or something much worse, that we start to actually care about our own well being.
It’s never too late to start practicing self care, and the benefits of it can be felt immediately. Something as simple as a bubble bath can be energizing, getting a much needed massage can be rejuvenating, and who hasn’t felt better for taking a much needed afternoon nap?
The self care you practice doesn’t have to be extravagant, it can be quite modest, it just needs to happen. You are worth pampering. You are worth caring for. The following tips for practicing self care are a great way to treat yourself and remain connected to your mind, body and soul.
Practicing Self Care
Eat Properly – Garbage in, garbage out. Don’t put crap in your body. Eat healthy, nutritious foods that satisfy nutritionally and your tastebuds. You’ll feel so much better when you cut out the junk, fast food and most of the refined sugar.
Drink Water – Most of us don’t drink enough water each day. Being hydrated is important to all cell function in your body. Drink at least 64 ounces of water each day.
Keep a Journal – Journaling each day helps to keep you focused on what you are feeling. Getting those emotions out, especially during recovery, can be hugely beneficial.
Take a Walk – Nothing clears your head better than a lovely, leisurely walk through the mountains. Get out and experience the beauty that New Mexico provides.
Breathe – Take a few moments each day to practice mindful breathing. Click here for some breathing exercises you can do today.
Practice Good Hygiene – Shower each day, wash your hair, shave your legs if that’s your thing. Wear the nice outfit, use the expensive cologne.
Meditate – Practicing mindfulness is a wonderful way to care for yourself. Take 20 minutes first thing in the morning, or at the end of the day to sit with yourself and clear your mind. Click here for some easy ways to practice mindfulness.
Practice Gratitude – Being thankful is one of the best ways to take care of yourself. Taking inventory of the people and things for which you are grateful can keep your mind in a positive state.
Listen to Music – Music soothes the soul so turn up the volume and rock out or just sway to the music.
