No matter where you are, there are always ways you can practice self care. Self care you can do now are things you can do at your desk at work, or while waiting in line at the grocery store check out. In other words, you don’t need anything special to take care of yourself. Some of self care we do every day, but forget that it is actually self care – eating, bathing, breathing.
Self Care you can Do Now
Smile – If you aren’t feeling wonderful, maybe even a little sad, smiling can help change that emotion. Fake it til you make it. Smiling tricks your brain into thinking you’re happy and acts accordingly.
Laugh – Laughter is the best medicine so if you’re feeling blue turn on an old I Love Lucy episode and laugh your way to health.
Take a Nap – Okay, maybe you can’t do this one at the grocery store or at your desk at work. Still, taking a nap is a great way to energize yourself. Of course it only works if you don’t feel guilty for taking the respite you need.
Vitamin D – During the winter months it’s easy to become vitamin D deficient, we simply don’t spend enough time in the sun. If we do, we’re covered up and aren’t getting the exposure. During the winter be sure to supplement with fortified milk or vitamin D tablets. During the warmer months, go outside and soak up the sun for 15 minutes. You’ll feel so much better for it.
Compliment Someone – Make a habit to compliment at least one person each day. Not only will you make their day better, but you’ll feel wonderful when you seek the good in everyone.
Read – Read a book each day. Preferably a real book not an ebook or online text. Sit down with a book in your lap and focus on it for 10 minutes (or as long as you like).
Hug Yourself – Self soothing is when we rub, hug or groom ourselves. Go ahead and hug yourself or rub your arms, you’ll be surprised at how good it feels.
Hug a Person – According to Virginia Satir we need 8 hugs a day for maintenance (4 to survive and 12 for growth). Most of us aren’t getting close to that many hugs. Go hug someone, you’ll feel better, they will feel better and you’ll only need 7 more for the day. If you can’t find a person to hug, hug your pets.
Forgive Yourself – Did you goof up the presentation this morning? Do you forget to pack a lunch for your child this morning? Did you say something hurtful in anger? Whatever you did, forgive yourself for it. You made a mistake, we all do. Forgive yourself, and move on. Life is too short to beat yourself up.
